Multiple Sclerosis
Symptoms
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a disease in which the body’s own immune system attacks myelin, which wraps around nerve fibres. This then affects how the nerves work and inhibit the fibres from sending signals correctly throughout the body. This leads to: muscle spasms and stiffness; fatigue, unusual sensations, pain, tremors, difficulty concentrating, bladder/digestive problems.
Benefits
Cannabis has a positive effect on muscle spasticity, stiffness, and pain. Cannabis strains that contain equal-to or higher amounts of CBD than THC are most beneficial to those suffering with multiple sclerosis. Spasms decrease, muscles relax, and people have more control over their bodiesy. Due to the anti-inflammatory properties of THC and CBD, inflammation within the brain has decreased in patients over time. The ability of THC to stimulate appetite causes the body to release digestive enzymes, which in turn increase the body’s metabolism and aid in any gastrointestinal issues people with MS might have.
Perhaps due to the psychoactive effects of THC, it is more difficult to ascertain improvements to affected cognitive functions, but CBD has been shown to possess neuroprotective factors that could help slow cognitive decline in those with MS.
Treatment
To improve the quality of life for someone who is living with MS, indica strains and those higher in myrcene have more of a body relaxation effect. Therefore, these strains can provide relief from muscle spasms, stiffness, and unusual sensations. Consuming an edible an hour before bed will combat insomnia and nightly pain. Since edibles have a strong effect on the body, they can induce longer periods of sleep. During the day, CBD oils, extracts, or flower can be administered to help with any pain and muscle stiffness or spasms. Lower THC with higher amounts of CBD is recommended for daytime use to help maintain mental clarity while managing pain.
