Menopause

Symptoms
Menopause is a time in a woman’s life of drastic hormonal changes with the cessation of egg production, typically beginning between the ages of 45 and 55 and lasting about 7 to 14 years. During this time, the ovaries no longer release eggs and stop producing estrogen, marking the end of menstrual cycles.

With this hormonal change women may experience: insomnia, mood swings, hot flashes, fatigue, depression, irritability, head aches, body pain, change in libido, racing heart, and bladder control problems.

The loss of estrogen can also lead to more serious problems with age, such as: osteoporosis, risk of Alzheimer’s, poor muscle power, heart disease.

Benefits
Though menopause is unavoidable, cannabis can make it easier to deal with in a natural way. Our bodies’ natural endocannabinoid system is responsible for maintaining homeostasis, and with the help of cannabinoids such as THC and CBD, women can help balance their bodily systems. Preliminary studies suggest that early onset of menopause can actually be caused by an endocannabinoid deficiency. Estrogen works with the endocannabinoid system, and when levels of this hormone drop, so do our natural endocannabinoid levels, which can lead to emotional and mood imbalance.

THC is known as an exceptional pain reliever and sleep aid. Unlike opioids or other pain medications, there is no risk of overdose or addiction. Studies also have shown that cannabis can mitigate depression and anxiety, and help regulate mood swings.

Treatment
There are a variety of methods to use in treating menopausal symptoms with cannabis. The most effective is micro-dosing throughout the day. This will keep symptoms at bay while still maintaining a clear mind. A combination of CBD and THC can be administered orally via tinctures, edibles, or edible oils. This will help with mood regulation as well as mediate any associated pain such as breast tenderness, headaches, or cramping. For more severe pain, vaping or smoking will provide immediate relief; however, this does not last as long as via ingestion. Higher THC strains or product will help with insomnia; a combination of vaping or smoking with oral drops of edibles can help with falling asleep and then staying asleep. However, THC products should be used with caution as they may exacerbate feelings of anxiety.
